Christmas Cocoa Murder- a Review

Standard

This was an anthology of three stories. Carlene O’Connor wrote Christmas Cocoa Murder;   Maddie Day wrote Christmas Cocoa and a Corpse; and Alex Erickson wrote Death by Hot Cocoa.

All three stories were enjoyable. I liked the Death by Hot Cocoa one the best. I enjoyed the escape room concept and the set up was clever. I did guess who-dun-it pretty quickly, but that didn’t interfere with my enjoyment of the story and the rooms set up in a holiday theme in the escape room.

The Christmas Cocoa Murder was also a really cool set up. As a fan of dunking tanks in my younger days, I loved how the author used that concept in her story—I can’t even imagine how sticky it would be to be dunked in cocoa though- *shudder* — The characters in this one were well drawn and intriguing. The mystery was well done and the nutcrackers were a neat addition to the puzzle.

My least favorite was Christmas Cocoa and a corpse. Not because the story lacked anything, it was a good concept and execution. What I didn’t care for was the nicknames – every single character had a nickname- which just seemed off-putting to me. I also didn’t enjoy the overuse of descriptions- too much detail on everything the characters wore and the settings. I know some people enjoy that, but it wasn’t my thing at all.

Overall, this was a cute set of stories and very holiday—if your holidays include murder by cocoa. 🙂

Got an email today with the cover of Hall-o-ween, Hell-o-ween Anthology to be published by Whortleberry Press. It’s an anthology with tours of the underworld. It will be available in September.  This will be my third Halloween story with them. This editor was the first one to say yes to one of my stories. This press will always have a special place in my heart for that.  Anyway, here’s the cover. See my cute little name right at the top on the back? NICE!

My story is called Music Hall, Music Hell and it’s a tour of the musice clubs in Hell, including San Remo Emo,  The Polka Pub, and Sam Fram’s Disco, to name a few.  It was a fun one to write.

New Story Coming Sept 2011

Standard

I have a new short story coming out September in a Halloween Anthology. The Anthology is called Halloween Hell-o-ween and it’s stories about tours of hell. My story is called Music Hall, Music Hell. It’s a tour of all the music clubs in hell. It’s a fun little story. I don’t  have a picture of the cover yet but as soon as I do, I’ll post it.

Halloween is my favorite holiday. I miss the days that my kids wanted to dress up and have a ball. We used to have a big party every year but it seemed like our friends lost interest in it and I stopped. It’s a lot of work because I never want anyone to leave my house hungry, so when it seemed like my friends weren’t interested in coming anymore, I decided to stop going to all the trouble. I do miss it but my little stories I write help me get in the fall mood.

One day, I’d love to go to Salem, Massachusetts  for the holiday. It calls to me.  I think it would be an amazing place to celebrate.

New Story Sale

Standard

I recently sold another short story- this one is called Music Hall, Music Hell.  It’s for an anthology called Happy Hell-o-Ween; Underworld Tours.  I wrote it in a couple of hours (after getting up three times in the night to jot down notes) and then let it simmer in my head for the day. I edited it that evening and submitted it. In 18 minutes, I had an acceptance.  The editor called it “a gem”-  made my day.

It’ll be out in September, 2011, I believe as it is a Halloween Anthology.  Check out the other books at the publisher’s website. I’ve got stories in several of them. I’m in Dear Valentine;  Christmas in Outer Space; Free Range Fairy Tales; Halloween Dances with the Dead;  and It Was a Dark and Stormy Halloween.  There are some amazing writers there.  http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/WhortleberryPress

Why I’m Digital

Standard

Sony Book Reader PRS-600 Touch Edition

I am already digital- Absolutely! I have an e-reader- being a writer who is published both under her real name (print and digital) and a pseudonym (digitally)- I would be an idiot not to have one. Trying to market e-books w/o a reader seems almost criminal, doesn’t it?

I have the Sony Touch. I like it except I wish it was wireless- that books could be uploaded w/o the usb cord. AND the battery life is not as long as I’d like since you can’t read while it is charging.

Check out my story called Pimps and Hos: http://www.lldreamspell.com/DreamspellMysteryVol1.htm
