Things I Don’t Understand

Standard

The Stuff I Don’t Get:

The following three things are things I’ll never understand:

1. How people can be cruel to children and animals. Both are so innocent and trusting, I just can’t fathom how someone could hurt either.

2. NASCAR- It’s grown people driving in circles for hours. What is the fascination? I don’t get it.

3. Mandarin Chinese- mainly because it’s got that whole other alphabet thing going on. It would be hard to learn a new language along with new characters, so I’m not even going to give it a whirl.

I Win!

Standard

I’m a superstar at any game requiring the knowledge of vast amounts of trivia. Trivial pursuit, Jeopardy, etc are my forte. I have so much junk in my head, it’s kind of a scary place to be.

I’ve passed this love of facts, figures, history, geography, pop culture, etc on to my second son as well. He’s captain of his school’s academic team and usually wins trivia night at Mellow Mushroom.

Arcana is our drug of choice.

My TV Show Not to be Missed as a Child

Standard

The first television show I remember having to leap off the school bus and run home to watch was Dark Shadows. My sister and I would fly down the road and to our house to catch the show. It was usually already on. She love Barnabas and wanted to be Angelique. I adored Quentin and wanted to be Daphe. It’s funny to look back on that as my sister is blonde and I’m a brunette and the woman we each wanted to be was typical of our type.

I have season one on DVD now and am shocked at how cheesy the show was. But dang, it was great gothic fun for two young girls.

A Box of Chocolates- No, Not That Kind of Turtle!

Standard

Our NeigHboRs PeT TurtLe

The best thing to find inside a chocolate is some type of nougat and nuts. My absolute favorite is caramel and pecans- a turtle– After that, walnuts with nougat. Can anyone resist a chocolate covered cherry? Nope, didn't think so.

Now, the fastest one I'll spit out is one with coconut inside. Not a fan of chocolate with coconut. At all. I like chocolate and I like coconut but do not cross the line and combine them. I also don't like the ones with that icky jelly like substance in them.

Call me nuts, but give me nuts- every time!

On Sarcasm

Standard

I "heart" Sarcasm

Romantic Heart form Love Seeds

Ahhh. Sarcasm. I love it. I like witty repartee and sarcasm can be fun – in moderation. I don't like it when it's used to hurt someone, but in a playful way, it can be interesting and flirtatious. I like to use it in my writing as characters seem more real if they have some idiosyncrasy and sarcasm can fit the bill there. So, yeah, I'd have to say I love it.

What Makes Me Cry- Then vs Now

Standard

Locker room with lonely lab coat

It's funny that as I get older the things that make me cry now are different than what made me cry as a younger person. I was always pretty tough as a kid and really only cried if I was physically hurt or super mad. When I get furious, the emotion tends to come out in tears – which makes me even madder at myself for showing weakness by crying, which makes me cry more. It's terrible.

As I have aged and now have children, I cry much easier and sometimes for strange reasons. I have been known to cry during a commercial on televsion. I cry when I read and in movies. I guess having children loosened something in my emotional make up to make it easier to let the tears flow.

I'm not a scientist or psychologist, but I think the unconditional love I have for my children may have had a good effect on me and allows me to be more open.

My Favorite Scary Movie

Standard

Keys Hanging

It’s not really my total favorite, but one of many. It’s also not really scary. It’s more suspenseful than anything. It’s called “Skeleton Key” and Kate Hudson and Gena Rowlands star in it. It’s intriguing and very atmospheric. The only real down side to it is the horrendous Cajun accents. *SHUDDER* If you can get past the accents, it’s a good flick for an evening’s entertainment.

The News That Interests Me Most

Standard

BB We can has games crossword puzzle

It’s not so much the news that interests me. I’m a crossword puzzle hound. My paper has two crosswords a day and that’s the first thing I turn to and do. AND, yes, I live life on the edge, I do them in pen. I hate, hate the sound of pencil on newspaper- it’s worse to me than nails on a chalkbord, but not as bad as someone sharpening a knife on a whetstone- yeah, you can call me weird if you want. I embrace it.

After the crosswords are done, I do the word jumble and then read the comics with my favorite being MUTTS. I love those critters.

So, the newspaper is more like a game-paper to me. And that’s all right with me.

On Luck

Standard

Life’s Not a Four Leaf Clover

Four leaf clover in red hair

I don’t believe in luck. I believe you make your own luck by working hard and trusting yourself to do the right thing. If you make the best of your circumstances, good things will come to you.

Bad things happen to everyone. It’s part of life. We’ve all experienced loss and frustration. If I thought luck played a part in everything that has happened to me, what would be the point of trying to better my circumstances? If what will be will be and I have no control over my life, what’s the use in striving for happiness?
