Agatha Christie Quote

Standard

I’m a huge fan of Dame Agatha Christie. I read all her books when I was a kid and I got so good at mystery solving, I could figure them out pretty early. I would write down who I thought did it and what page I was on when I figured it out. I then gave the note to my sister so she would see that I wasn’t cheating. One of the earliest professional plays I saw was The Mouse Trap in the West End of London and I’ve kept the vow all these years that I won’t tell whodunit. That’s the actual longest play running and they ask the audience at the end not to tell whodunit so that people new to the play won’t know.

Anyway, all this to lead up to a favorite quote of mine from Ms. Christie. She said, “The best time to plan a book is while you’re doing the dishes.”

I think she’s absolutely right. It’s when we’re doing mundane tasks that the best ideas come. I know it’s true for me.

Woke Up With This Song in My Head

Standard

I love this song- it’s so fun and reminds me of childhood and all the little stories I loved such as the Owl and the Pussycat, the one where the dish runs off with the spoon, the cute forest creatures of Beatrix Potter and of course, the Wind in the Willows. Enjoy a Song for the Children by Jimmy Buffett

Someone Needs a Geography Lesson

Standard

My father and I have this weird tradition of sharing typos we see in our local paper (and there are a lot) as well as crazy mistakes on television. Today he sent me this:

“Heard from Congressman this am in regard to Keystone pipeline …if we can build a pipeline through Antarctica when it’s cold and frozen up there, we can safely build one in Kansas… ”

Hold the horses, Nellie! Antarctica is UP? When did that happen? Did I miss a memo?

Moral of the story: Even if you’re lucky enough to get elected, please, please keep your mouth shut if you have no idea what you’re saying.

A Sad Week

Standard

In the last week, I’ve had a lot of sadness in my life. It’s weird how it comes in spurts like that. It started with the death of the man who rented office space from me. He’s been ill for a while so even though we all knew he was not doing well, it was a bit of a shock to hear that he passed away in his sleep during the day on last Friday. His family has decided to have his services in the town where he grew up instead of here where he lived for over thirty years. This saddens me as he was a big part of the community here and they are robbing us of the chance to say goodbye.

In the last day, I learned that a friend’s son was killed when a car backed over him. He was only seven. I’m utterly shattered for my friend and her family. I know how much they adored that little boy and I can’t wrap my head around such a devastating loss. I don’t know how they’re going to make it from day to day with this hole in their lives. There’s nothing I can say or do to make it better. I wish there was.

Death really puts things in perspective. I know I let things bother me and I get hurt easily but as I think about these people -both too young to go- being gone and no longer able to enjoy time with family and friends, I find myself hoping that the life I lead in the time I have left is one such that my family and friends will be as bereft as I am at the loss of these two. I endeavor to be as good a person as they both were.

An Old Family Tradition

Standard

My father’s mother always told this joke once a year and after she passed away, my father took over. It’s not the first week of March without it (and believe it or not, my grandmother’s birthday was March 5 and, had she lived, she would’ve been turning 97 tomorow).  Here’s the joke:

Question: What’s the soldier’s least favorite day of the year?

Answer: March fourth.

Yep. It’s lame but it’s a tradition. What can I say?

Doors

Standard

I’ve long been a fan of doors. Wherever I go, I find doors that intrigue me. Red doors on churches signified sanctuary in medieval times and I have lots of photos of red doors. Old doors with peeling paint are inspiring and beautiful to me. I love to see a door with character. Here are a few from my recent travels. Enjoy!

Crazy Day

Standard

Today, Tropical storm Isaac is supposed to make land fall. We are home since we don’t want to be caught out in it even though we are only getting the outer part of the storm. It’s crazy though because it’s not your typical tropical storm. We are having the dark, rainy, windy bands of bad weather but then, miraculously, we are then having nice, beautiful blue skies and sun as well. It seems to be a bi-polar storm. Let’s hope the bad bands stay few and far between.

Here’s hoping all my friends to the west of me stay safe and keep their power!!
