New Book Acceptance

Standard

My NaNoWriMo story for 2013 was set in New Orleans, La and is called The Eisenger Element. It’s a sophisticated mystery with a couple of fun characters. I especially enjoy the heroine and her partner. They are homicide detectives and they cracked me up with their banter. She has some quirks such as giving everyone nicknames and she’s flat out sassy.

The hero is more staid as he’s a lawyer and tightly wound. He has a brother in prison in Angola, La. The brother was wrongfully convicted of murder and the hero is doing his level best to get him released.

The prison has annual rodeos in real life so I incorporated that into the story. I also set some scenes in my beloved French Quarter and the Garden District.

This was a very fun story to write and the first 50,000 words were done in 12 days. I love it when a story really speaks to me. It ended up at 64,000 words and was totally drafted in 25 days. I, of course, spent much more time polishing it!

I got the acceptance email from Black Opal Books on my way to New Orleans for the RT conference last week (how cool is that?). I don’t have a release day as yet but I’ll post more as things occur.

Getting Better and A New Contract

Standard

I was sick for three weeks and have been woefully neglectful of this blog. I will make a better effort in the future. I do have some good news. I have signed a contract with Black Opal Books to publish my murder mystery novel set in 1937 on the Orient Express. It’s called Senior Assassin.

I have a running list of names for stories and sometimes it takes me a while to write the story that goes with an awesome title. The title for Senior Assassin came when my son was a senior in high school (he graduated in 2012). Our school has a tradition with water guns and seniors of playing a game where there are teams of two and each kid pays to play. There’s a master of the game who assigns partners and holds the money. Last person standing gets the pot of money. They hide out and jump from bushes, etc to soak each other with the water from the water guns. I thought it was kind of dangerous myself but my kid played anyway and he was second to last man standing. He was robbed!! LOL!

Anyway, I loved the name Senior Assassin and this book lent itself perfectly to the title. When I told my son that I got a contract on it, he said, “You stole that name from when I was in high school.” I freely admitted it and told him about the premise of the story.

He said, “So, no teenagers and water guns in it?”

My response: “No. Pre World War II spies instead and a Nazi. Same thing, right?”

Him: “That’s pretty much what I had to do when I played, so yeah, everyone was a spy or a Nazi. They all had to die.”

Love that dude’s sense of humor.

New Short Story Release-

Standard

This new short story is available for purchase here and the background photo for the cover was taken by yours truly on my trip to Edinburgh, Scotland last October. Very exciting to have that photo credit. It makes me very happy. Here’s the original photo as well as the cover and blurb:

BLURB:
Working on her doctoral dissertation has been stressful for Jenna Monroe, an American studying at Edinburgh University. She’s writing about the mythological kingdom of Camelot which historians believe was above the City of Edinburgh at a place called Arthur’s Seat near Salisbury Crag. She hikes up to the crag for inspiration, and while resting there, meets a man in a hooded cape.

The man introduces himself as Art, the son of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere. A castle appears out of the mist and the man escorts her inside to dine. Believing it to be a vivid dream brought on by too much stress, Jenna shrugs off the encounter. She’s later shocked when she sees the man from her dream in town.

Book Review- Secret Letters- Leah Scheier

Standard

12924019I read this book in one afternoon. It was a great little story about a young Victorian era girl who believes that Sherlock Holmes is her father. She travels to London with her cousin to hire him when the cousin’s secret letters are stolen and she becomes the victim of an extortion scheme.

Upon arrival, the heroine is shocked to learn that Mr. Holmes has died in the Rickenbach Falls adventure. She meets his former apprentice and the adventure begins. She goes in disguise to an estate in the country in order to find the culprit and also gets involved in a missing person case.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It was atmospheric and well written. I did figure out whodunit before the protagonists but I usually do in these kinds of books. It didn’t take away from my enjoyment though.

I recommend this as a fun, quick read.

Book Review- Murder DeJa Vu- Polly Iyer

Standard

Murder Deja Vu by Polly Iyer was an enjoyable read. It started a little slow for me. The hero in the story spent fifteen years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit and once he’s out and an investigator for his lawyer is trying to uncover the truth, another murder occurs. This murder is of a local woman and is carried out in the same manner. This is when the action picked up considerably in the story.

The villains in this story were very evil, especially the former husband of the heroine. He’s the local prosecutor and has an agenda of his own and while I enjoyed the story, the only part that I didn’t like is that we didn’t get to see him get his comeuppance. It was almost an aside at the end of the book. I really, really would have liked a scene where we, as the readers, could watch as he went down.

I recommend this one. The writing is clean and clear and the author will take you on an adventure.

Book Review- Blood Money

Standard

thI love James Grippando and his Jack Swytek series of novels. If you haven’t read any of these, you’re really missing out. The latest installment, Blood Money, is clearly inspired by the Casey Anthony trial. There are too many similarities to miss. This is clearly a fiction tale and it’s cool how he used this trial to build a thrilling story around some of the facts. I love how Mr. Grippando even made a word play on the horrific Nancy Grace by naming his media shark Faith Corso. That cracked me up. First of all, because the character was clearly based on that odious woman and the last name of Corso made me think of coarse which she is. (Remember, all this is my opinion only-if you like this woman, that’s your prerogative. I don’t).

This book is a fast read and very exciting. I don’t want to give any spoilers so I won’t say much about the plot but this one is packed with lots of angles and turns. I was a little disappointed in a couple of things that never seemed to get resolved and I would’ve liked to know the answers to those questions. It was nothing that took away from the final solution to the whodunit but there were threads left hanging that didn’t please me. There was also the matter of something that niggled at me about Swyteck’s client, Sydney. She acted in a way that didn’t make sense to me. After learning what kind of person she was, I had a hard time reconciling her willingness to do a certain thing with what we learn about her on the journey, but all in all, this was a fun read with enough twists and turns to satisfy the toughest critic.

The story has Mr. Grippando’s usual wit with his main protagonist, Jack and his best friend, Theo. These two characters are larger than life and I adore how they play off each other and the way the zingers keep coming even when they are inthe midst of trouble. I recommend this one. Highly.

418XFnCZWrL__BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA300_SH20_OU01_I’m reading a book about and by a former undercover ATF agent called Assassin Hunter. It’s an amazing story of bravery and I’m in awe of the man who wrote it. I met him this past weekend and he’s an intriguing and interesting man. Reading this book about his experiences in the undercover world is making me admire him even more. The experiences he describes are pretty harrowing. This real life story reads like a novel but it gives me chills as I realize how easily it could have turned out tragically for this man.

To meet him, the first impression you would have is that he’s mild-mannered and polite but man! under that exterior must beat a heart of steel. He’s gutsy as hell. My admiration for this man and all he did is growing more as I continue to read. I’m not even finished with it and I highly recommend this one. Run and grab your copy now! Here’s a link to make it easy.
